how i fell for the vocabulary trap

There’s an unspoken trap that many Mandarin learners fall for.

It’s the belief that adding more and more words will make you fluent. It’s the idea that if you just keep building your vocabulary, speaking will eventually become effortless.

This approach feels logical. It keeps you busy and makes you feel like you’re making progress. But that feeling can be deceiving.

Don’t get me wrong, I love listening to podcasts and learning new vocabulary. Input is essential. But listening alone is not enough.

Think of your brain as a cup. Each new word or listening session fills the cup with water. At first, everything fits nicely.

But if you never stop adding, the cup starts to overflow. You reach a point where your mind becomes overwhelmed.

The extra vocabulary doesn’t translate into better speaking skills. It creates confusion.

This is why I felt constantly overwhelmed.

Accumulating vocabulary without using it is like pouring water into a full cup. It spills over and you waste your time.

Your brain gets cluttered, and the words you’ve learned become harder to access. You’re working hard but not moving forward.

Maybe your understanding improves, but speaking doesn’t. You know a lot of words passively, but you can’t use them in conversation.

The danger of the vocabulary trap is how productive it feels. Memorizing words and listening to audio content give a false sense of progress. It’s comforting.

Accumulating vocabulary is safe. It keeps you from facing the discomfort of using the language and speaking.

Speaking involves risk. It means making mistakes and feeling awkward.

As you may know I started speaking Mandarin by practicing alone in my bedroom. I watched videos, repeated phrases, and recorded myself speaking. It's simple but powerful. Here's why: Practicing alone helps you isolate the problem. Talking to someone in a new language is tough. You have to think of what to say, how to form your thoughts and pronounce it correctly. But you also have to listen and understand what the other person is saying. And then there's the element of social anxiety and...

The most important lesson I've learned about speaking Mandarin is this: The more I speak, the more I am allowed to speak. When I started building a daily speaking habit and recording myself speaking every day, something interesting happened. I didn’t suddenly gain more vocabulary or better tones after the first day. But I noticed myself speaking MORE Mandarin immediately after recording. I started thinking in Chinese. I started talking to myself in Chinese. Why? Because speaking builds...

When I moved to Taiwan in 2019, my Mandarin was terrible. I could say a few phrases, but my tones were wrong, and I lacked confidence. I remember passing by a bustling food market by my Airbnb on my first day of arriving. I was enthralled and wanted to check it out. But I was afraid to speak. I remember the fear vividly—nerves rising, social anxiety creeping in. What if someone noticed? What if they judged me? What if they mocked me? But I decided to be bold. I walked up to a fruit stall and...
