learning Chinese makes me more social

I just had a fascinating discussion in Chinese with other leaners and teachers inside the Chinese Speakers Community.

We chatted about making friends and the 剧本杀 phenomenon taking over China!

剧本杀 (jùběn shā), or "script murder," is a popular role-playing game among young people in China and many young people use 剧本杀 to make new friends. Have you heard of it?

Making new friends and staying social is not easy in this new age of technology and decreased attention span.

It can be easy to keep myself busy working all day and neglecting the social aspect of life.

This made me reflect on how lucky I am to be learning Chinese.

Learning new vocabulary and characters is cool. But what's even cooler is getting to use it to connect with people.

Learning Chinese keeps me social. It helps me get out of my head, meet new friends, and build new relationships.

I don't have the same walls up as I would if I were communicating in English. I'm more modest because I'm aware of how much I don't know. This helps the conversation flow.

Just like exercise and going to the gym is good for my physical health, chatting and speaking in Mandarin is good for my mental health.

It's an easy excuse for me to stay social, to get out of my head and just have fun.

This is why I love speaking Mandarin.

Learning to speak Mandarin has made it possible for me to travel to Taiwan, make new friends and build a new life here.

If you want to improve your spoken Mandarin I created the Copy Paste Speak course to help you do that.

It's a simple system that guides you step-by-step how to speak Mandarin like native speakers just by watching videos.

The system is available now at 50% off for an early Black Friday deal.

If you purchase this week, I’ll also include a bonus: my Passive → Active Vocab Workshop.

As you may know I started speaking Mandarin by practicing alone in my bedroom. I watched videos, repeated phrases, and recorded myself speaking. It's simple but powerful. Here's why: Practicing alone helps you isolate the problem. Talking to someone in a new language is tough. You have to think of what to say, how to form your thoughts and pronounce it correctly. But you also have to listen and understand what the other person is saying. And then there's the element of social anxiety and...

The most important lesson I've learned about speaking Mandarin is this: The more I speak, the more I am allowed to speak. When I started building a daily speaking habit and recording myself speaking every day, something interesting happened. I didn’t suddenly gain more vocabulary or better tones after the first day. But I noticed myself speaking MORE Mandarin immediately after recording. I started thinking in Chinese. I started talking to myself in Chinese. Why? Because speaking builds...

When I moved to Taiwan in 2019, my Mandarin was terrible. I could say a few phrases, but my tones were wrong, and I lacked confidence. I remember passing by a bustling food market by my Airbnb on my first day of arriving. I was enthralled and wanted to check it out. But I was afraid to speak. I remember the fear vividly—nerves rising, social anxiety creeping in. What if someone noticed? What if they judged me? What if they mocked me? But I decided to be bold. I walked up to a fruit stall and...
