why I use templates to improve speaking

Learning to speak Mandarin is hard because there are so many moving pieces. You have to remember new words, tones, and sentence patterns, all while trying not to freeze up.

This is why I love using templates.

Using Speaking Templates helped me build a daily speaking habit and get conversational quickly (without even talking to people).

Think of them as training wheels in the beginning. Once you get started, it's a lot easier to keep going.

What's a template?

A Speaking Template is a written draft that you can refer to that structures your speaking. Simple and effective.

Why does it work?

1. It builds muscle memory.

Repeating the same phrases every day helps you develop muscle memory. Your brain gets used to common sentence patterns. Before long, these phrases come naturally. You speak without needing to overthink, and your confidence grows.

2. You reduce anxiety.

Thinking of what to say on the spot can be stressful. Templates reduce this pressure. They give you a starting point, so you’re not scrambling for words. With less mental load, you can focus on speaking clearly and using proper tones.

3. You get over the fear of making mistakes.

Mistakes are scary, but templates make them less likely. Using a structured approach means fewer errors, and that helps you feel more secure. When you feel safe, you’re more likely to practice. And practicing is how you improve.

4. Keep it simple.

Language learning can feel overwhelming. You have to remember new words, tones, and sentence patterns, all while trying not to freeze up Templates break it down into something simple and doable.

Using a template was crucial for improving my Mandarin speaking skills.

This month, I'm helping a small group of improve their spoken Mandarin with the use of templates.

I'll show you my exact template that got me conversational (without talking to people).

Tomorrow is the last day to join and then it's gone.

If you’re interested, reply “template.”

As you may know I started speaking Mandarin by practicing alone in my bedroom. I watched videos, repeated phrases, and recorded myself speaking. It's simple but powerful. Here's why: Practicing alone helps you isolate the problem. Talking to someone in a new language is tough. You have to think of what to say, how to form your thoughts and pronounce it correctly. But you also have to listen and understand what the other person is saying. And then there's the element of social anxiety and...

The most important lesson I've learned about speaking Mandarin is this: The more I speak, the more I am allowed to speak. When I started building a daily speaking habit and recording myself speaking every day, something interesting happened. I didn’t suddenly gain more vocabulary or better tones after the first day. But I noticed myself speaking MORE Mandarin immediately after recording. I started thinking in Chinese. I started talking to myself in Chinese. Why? Because speaking builds...

When I moved to Taiwan in 2019, my Mandarin was terrible. I could say a few phrases, but my tones were wrong, and I lacked confidence. I remember passing by a bustling food market by my Airbnb on my first day of arriving. I was enthralled and wanted to check it out. But I was afraid to speak. I remember the fear vividly—nerves rising, social anxiety creeping in. What if someone noticed? What if they judged me? What if they mocked me? But I decided to be bold. I walked up to a fruit stall and...
